Laura Hughes is a Massachusetts based artist focused on Contemporary Realism Painting. Laura started painting at a young age, taking art lessons up to and throughout high school, and studied painting in college receiving a BA in Studio Art.

In college, Laura was introduced and inspired by the Contemporary Realism movement of the 1960’s and early 70’s, featuring a straightforward approach to representation; depicting the real and not ideal.

Laura has and continues to draw direct inspiration from the works of Janet Fish, Neil Welliver, Phillip Pearlstein and Alex Katz. College taught Laura to increase the scale of her work, paint large, and in oil, her preferred medium up until today. She paints still life compositions and takes great interest combining curated objects, and patterns to create a cohesive narrative and harmonious design.

Laura often incorporates her favorite things into her still life compositions, including love of the sea, flowers, animals, and a whimsical nod to other artists, including music, film, and literary references. While her work is not considered pop art, Laura’s style over the years has evolved to include more commercial references and a bolder more graphic approach to painting.

Over the last 30 years Laura has worked hard to balance a “day job” and finding time to paint consistently each day, improving her skills. Through her art, Laura’s goal is to bring happiness and beauty to the world while also honoring a life-long commitment to her passion.
